Prayer Guide in response to Uvalde School shooting

Call to Prayer

“May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him.”

 (Psalm 68:1)

Praying with the Psalms:

Psalm 44:20-26

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God

or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

21 would not God have discovered it,

since he knows the secrets of the heart?

22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;

we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep?

Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.

24 Why do you hide your face

and forget our misery and oppression?

25 We are brought down to the dust;

our bodies cling to the ground.

26 Rise up and help us;

rescue us because of your unfailing love.

Prayer

“Everlasting God, we are outraged at the slaughter of school children and teachers.  How is it that such wretched evil is carried out on our nation’s kids?  Our hearts cry out for you to rise up and rescue.  Do not ignore injustice, do not allow evil to triumph.

For the parents, grandparents, siblings, classmates, school, community, in their pain be present, allow us to see your cross and your justice that will come.  In our disgust and vulnerability show us your mercy – have mercy on us O Lord, we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

Yet for those in Christ – nothing will be able to separate us from your love.  Not death nor life, not angels or demons, neither the present or the future.  Our confidence is in Jesus you will not let your children be separated from your eternal glory.  Our hope is that in the midst of evil, Christ’s victory on the cross has already condemned Satan to hell.  As we live in this broken and hurting world longing for your perfection, send your Spirit to raise up your church to compassionate action and proclamation of your justice and love.  We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen”
