Psalms of Suffering

In times of distress, many find it helpful to pray with these psalms to the Strong God who hears the cry of his children.

Psalm 62:5-8
5  Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. 6  Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7  My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8  Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.

Psalm 91:1-4
1  Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2  This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. 3  For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. 4  He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

Psalm 23:1-4
1  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2  He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3  He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 86:1-7
1  Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help. 2  Protect me, for I am devoted to you. Save me, for I serve you and trust you. You are my God. 3  Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am calling on you constantly. 4  Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to you. 5  O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help. 6  Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord; hear my urgent cry. 7  I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble, and you will answer me.

Psalm 116:1-7
1  I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. 2  Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. 3  The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow. 4  Then I called on the name of the Lord: “Lord, save me!” 5  The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. 6  The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me. 7  Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.
